Peter van Kampen – Live Simply: So That Others Might Simply Live

Peter van Kampen – Live Simply: So That Others Might Simply Live

Dominic and Paul talk with Peter van Kampen, a youth minister and author who has written about Catholic teaching on wealth and simplicity. More important than that though, he has taken steps to live out this teaching. In fact, it was through first following the teaching that he eventually came to understand it. Peter’s story is prophetic, that is, it challenges and inspires others to embrace “a way of life marked by the flavor of the Gospel” (Fratelli Tutti 1).

Peter van Kampen is a Youth Ministry Coordinator who lives with his wife and 5 kids in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Peter is the author of 3 books, including “Live Simply: So That Others Might Simply Live.”

The Common Good in Catholic Social Teaching

The Common Good in Catholic Social Teaching

Dominic and Paul walk through the second of the four principles of Catholic Social Teaching: the Common Good. The Church teaches that every single human person is owed the material means the need to flourish, namely: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education, employment, rest, etc. This is both challenging teaching and wonderfully good news.

Man has the right to live. He has the right to bodily integrity and to the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and, finally, the necessary social services. In consequence, he has the right to be looked after in the event of illhealth; disability stemming from his work; widowhood; old age; enforced unemployment; or whenever through no fault of his own he is deprived of the means of livelihood.

The Infinite Dignity of Every Human Person

The Infinite Dignity of Every Human Person

Paul and Dominic discuss the first of the four principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the dignity of the human person. We are all tempted to reduce the value of others, to, as Pope Francis puts it, “despise the limit that another’s value imposes.” Since Vatican II, the Church has emphasized the infinite dignity of every human being and has explained the implications of that belief.

“Faith has untold power to inspire and sustain our respect for others, for believers come to know that God loves every man and woman with infinite love and ‘thereby confers infinite dignity’ upon all humanity. We likewise believe that Christ shed his blood for each of us and that no one is beyond the scope of his universal love.” (Fratelli Tutti 85)

What is Catholic Social Teaching? | Pope Francis Generation

What is Catholic Social Teaching? | Pope Francis Generation

Paul and Dominic kick off Season Two by asking, what is Catholic Social Teaching? They share stories about how they first came across this “best-kept secret” of the Church’s tradition before Paul launches into the history and development of the Church’s social doctrines. Catholic Social Teaching challenges every political ideology and calls for Christians to embrace the “upside down” thinking of Jesus.

“Certainly, all this calls for an alternative way of thinking. Without an attempt to enter into that way of thinking, what I am saying here will sound wildly unrealistic. On the other hand, if we accept the great principle that there are rights born of our inalienable human dignity, we can rise to the challenge of envisaging a new humanity. We can aspire to a world that provides land, housing and work for all. This is the true path of peace.” (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti)

ABOUT PAUL FAHEY
Paul lives in Michigan with my wife, Kristina, and four kids. A catechist, retreat leader, counseling student, as well as a contributor and co-founder of Where Peter Is. Paul writes and speaks about what I love: the Kerygma, the Sacraments, Catholic Social Teaching, and Pope Francis. https://pfahey.com/

ABOUT DOMINIC DE SOUZA
SmartCatholics founder, Dominic de Souza, is a convert from radical traditionalism – inspired by WherePeterIs, Bishop Robert Barron, and Pope Francis. He is passionate about helping ordinary Catholics break the ‘bystander effect’, and be firstresponders. “We don’t have to be geniuses. We just have to show up with witness and kindness. Christ does the rest.” Today he hosts the SmartCatholics community. https://smartcatholics.com

SPONSOR: SELECT INTERNATIONAL TOURS
More Catholic Leaders choose Select International Tours than any other pilgrimage company. With 35 years of award-winning travel planning, they have a track record of excellence and faithfulness. And they are a small company with a big heart, because every one of their pilgrimage trips helps to support and fund their 501 (c)(3) charity work, helping Christian families thrive in the Holy Land. If you’re ready to travel, or if you’re looking to lead a group of your own, take the next step on your pilgrimage by visiting: https://selectinternationaltours.com

Meet The City & The World, Catholic Journalism with Pedro & Claire Domingues

‘The City & the World’s aim is to show the beauty of Catholicism in its daily expression, from the news to the devotions and spirituality, from the Vatican to the four corners of the earth. In an online environment hostile to the Catholic Church and the pope (both from people from inside and outside the Church,) we seek to provide credible information about our religion, dissipate fake news, eschew ideological biases, and let our religion shine forth in all its truth and splendor.

Feminism, Women, Culture and Catholicism with Samantha Povlock | FemCatholic

Feminism, Women, Culture and Catholicism with Samantha Povlock | FemCatholic

Samantha Povlock is the founder of FemCatholic, a media company for women living in the tension between their faith and real life. She is a Notre Dame grad and spent the past decade working in corporate America in Chicago. Now a transplant to Philadelphia, she and her husband have three kids.

ABOUT FEMCATHOLIC
Feminism is no longer just a movement, it’s the undertone of secular society. In order to reach people we actually must translate the gospel into a kind of “feminist dialect,” which requires truly encountering and understanding the issues women are facing and the solutions they are currently seeking.
