Every year on Holy Saturday the Church, in the Office of Readings, gives us a reading titled, “From an Ancient Homily on Holy Saturday.”
This is one of my favorite things ever written and praying with it has become a Holy Saturday radiation for me. I wanted to share it with you along with a short personal reflection.
This ancient homily is a description of the event we remember every time we say the Apostles Creed, Jesus Christ “descended into hell.”
Jesus is dead. His body is lying in a cold tomb. His friends are devastated and terrified. Jesus lost. He’s dead. What are they going to do now?
While from their perspective Jesus had lost, the Lord, in fact, was winning.
Please join me in praying through this beautiful homily.
