New Announcement: Father’s Heart Academy with Paul Fahey on SmartCatholics

Feb 3, 2023

I’m unbelievably excited to share this announcement with you!

I’ve been working hard with my friend Paul Fahey to create our very first academy, all to help us be better catechists.

SmartCatholics has always been about creating a haven for learners and Catholics to share conversations and questions. Now, we’re (finally!) launching the next phase: education and catechesis.

2022 launched our podcast, Pope Francis Generation – which blew us away with its popularity.

Now, check out Father’s Heart Academy! It is for any Catholic who wants to grow in their relationship with God and the Church. It is also perfect for catechists and ministers who want to experience life-giving catechesis in order to share it with others.

Are you feeling alienated from Catholic culture? Are you looking for more compelling answers to your questions about Church teaching? Are you searching for a more beautiful Gospel?

The mission of Father’s Heart Academy is to present Church teachings in light of the Kerygma, the proclamation of God’s goodness and desire for us, and walk with you through the Church’s actual teachings, clearing away any added opinions and rules.

Our program is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of magisterial teachings.

  • This spring we will study Desiderio Desideravi, Pope Francis’ new Apostolic Letter about the Eucharistic Liturgy. And that’s just the beginning!
  • In May/June we will study Pope Francis’ foundational teaching about holiness, Gaudete et Exsultate.
  • And in August/September we will study Fratelli Tutti, the Church’s newest social encyclical that presents the antidote for the world’s social problems.

We will study each of these documents as a group, with time for teaching, discussion, personal reflection, and prayer.

In addition to studying magisterial documents, at Father’s Heart Academy, you’ll have access to Paul Fahey’s podcast and articles, and be a part of a community to discuss them. Each month, you’ll also have the opportunity to virtually meet up with me to discuss a particular topic, recent podcast, or current event in the Church. We also offer seminars on specific topics and documents.

Abuse and cover up at Franciscan University with Liz Hansen

Abuse and cover up at Franciscan University with Liz Hansen

This week, Paul and Dominic talk with Liz Hansen. A couple of years ago she wrote an article titled, “Franciscan University and Its Friars Face a Reckoning” about Fr. Dave Morrier, a former campus minister at Franciscan University of Steubenville who pled guilty to rape and sexual battery. Liz was a student at Franciscan while Morrier was director of household life. This story felt like a microcosm of the abuse and cover up that plagues the Catholic Church as a whole, so we talked about what it’s like being Catholic without denying the real good or the terrible evil in our Church.

Elizabeth Hansen graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2008 with majors in English and Theology. She and her husband Luke met in the university’s Honors Great Books program; they raise their four children in Michigan. Elizabeth’s writing has appeared in Magnificat, Columbia Magazine, Plough, CruxNow.com, and FemCatholic.com.

*A heads up that this episode will include discussion about sexual assault and spiritual abuse.

St. Joseph Novena – Day 9

St. Joseph Novena – Day 9

At the beginning of the Year of St. Joseph, Pope Francis wrote an Apostolic Letter about Joseph titled, Patris Corde (“With a Father’s Heart”).

A couple of years ago I formatted the letter into a novena. This year, for the nine days leading up to Joseph’s feast day, I’m going to publish a short podcast that will include one section of the pope’s letter about St. Joseph, Patris Corde, a short personal reflection, and a closing prayer.
