Born with mild Cerebral Palsy, Dustin Quick was baptized Catholic as an infant. He was raised in a loving, non-denominational Christian home. He converted to Islam while studying for an undergraduate degree in Canada. He also earned a Master’s in History, focusing on the Nation of Islam. Dustin’s conversion to Christ led him to a Presbyterian church, where he met his wife, Tanya. They married in 2014, and were received into the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil 2015.
Today, Dustin hosts the podcast, ‘Holy Smokes: Cigars, Catholicism, and Conversation.’ Dustin is on a mission to let the world know that the Catholic Church is the restoration and fulfillment of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Malcolm Schluenderfritz is the host of ‘Happy Are You Poor’, a blog and podcast about radical Christian community as a means of evangelization.
A former traditionalist who rejoined the mainstream Church. Malcolm realized that traditionalism is deeply flawed and is not the right answer to the crisis in the US Catholic Church. During this transition, he had to rethink everything he thought he knew about the Faith, and question all his past assumptions. Along the way, he learned that unity is the organizing principle of the Faith, and that this unity should be lived out in community. He also realized that Christian community and voluntary poverty are two sides of the same coin, and that the absence of both is seriously damaging US Catholicism.

This week, Dominic and Paul take a look at the Church’s teaching about hell. They navigate questions like: Are all people saved? Should we hope that everyone is saved? Can someone really commit an action worthy of an eternal punishment? How can we reconcile eternal torment with a loving God?
“With death, our life-choice becomes definitive—our life stands before the judge. Our choice, which in the course of an entire life takes on a certain shape, can have a variety of forms. There can be people who have totally destroyed their desire for truth and readiness to love, people for whom everything has become a lie, people who have lived for hatred and have suppressed all love within themselves. This is a terrifying thought, but alarming profiles of this type can be seen in certain figures of our own history. In such people all would be beyond remedy and the destruction of good would be irrevocable: this is what we mean by the word Hell” (Pope Benedict, Spe Salvi 45).

Michael started studying Protestant mystics of the last 400 years, and that led him to research Russian mystics and submerged traditions within Christianity. His findings have been published as books, and he hosts a podcast and an annual magazine to re-ignite creativity. Central to his mission is the re-discovery of our connection in Creation, and the presence in Sacred Scripture of an ignored angelic being known as Wisdom/Sophia.
Michael Martin, Ph.D. is a philosopher, poet, musician, songwriter, editor, and biodynamic farmer. He spent sixteen years as a Waldorf teacher and Master Teacher, and taught at the university and college level for over seventeen years. He began biodynamic farming in 1990 and currently raises dairy goats, bees, and other animals while managing a market garden with his wife and some of his nine children. His poetry and scholarship have appeared in many journals and he is the editor of ‘Jesus the Imagination: A Journal of Spiritual Revolution’.
