Evangelical Evangelist visits Skellig Michael, considers Catholicism, & starts Academy – Greg Smith

Greg Smith is a former evangelical evangelist, left the mega churches to become an evangelist for the original mega Church. He converted to Christianity in college ministry. Studied history, philosophy, Greek and Hebrew. Got an MDiv from Calvinist seminary, and then 25 years as teaching pastor, in global missions, and consulting/publishing with the largest evangelical churches in the world. On a trip to Skellig Michael, in Ireland, he felt called to Catholicism. His road to Rome led to entering the Church in 2016. Greg founded the Lakeshore Academy for the New Evangelization in 2017, and ‘One Whirling Adventure’ in 2021. He launched the ‘Considering Catholicism’ podcast in early 2022.

A Catholic pastoral approach to gay men and women

A Catholic pastoral approach to gay men and women

Paul and Dominic walk through what the Catechism says about homosexuality in order explain what the Church teaches, what the church does not teach, and how Catholics need to live up to what our own faith calls us to.

“The centrality of the kerygma calls for stressing those elements which are most needed today: it has to express God’s saving love which precedes any moral and religious obligation on our part; it should not impose the truth but appeal to freedom; it should be marked by joy, encouragement, liveliness and a harmonious balance which will not reduce preaching to a few doctrines which are at times more philosophical than evangelical. All this demands on the part of the evangelizer certain attitudes which foster openness to the message: approachability, readiness for dialogue, patience, a warmth and welcome which is non-judgmental.” (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium)

Will ‘voluntary poverty’ save US Catholicism? ‘Happy Are You Poor’ with Malcolm Schluenderfritz

Will ‘voluntary poverty’ save US Catholicism? ‘Happy Are You Poor’ with Malcolm Schluenderfritz

Malcolm Schluenderfritz is the host of ‘Happy Are You Poor’, a blog and podcast about radical Christian community as a means of evangelization.

A former traditionalist who rejoined the mainstream Church. Malcolm realized that traditionalism is deeply flawed and is not the right answer to the crisis in the US Catholic Church. During this transition, he had to rethink everything he thought he knew about the Faith, and question all his past assumptions. Along the way, he learned that unity is the organizing principle of the Faith, and that this unity should be lived out in community. He also realized that Christian community and voluntary poverty are two sides of the same coin, and that the absence of both is seriously damaging US Catholicism.

Creation, Mysticism, Sacred Scripture and Sophiology with Michael Martin

Creation, Mysticism, Sacred Scripture and Sophiology with Michael Martin

Michael started studying Protestant mystics of the last 400 years, and that led him to research Russian mystics and submerged traditions within Christianity. His findings have been published as books, and he hosts a podcast and an annual magazine to re-ignite creativity. Central to his mission is the re-discovery of our connection in Creation, and the presence in Sacred Scripture of an ignored angelic being known as Wisdom/Sophia.

Michael Martin, Ph.D. is a philosopher, poet, musician, songwriter, editor, and biodynamic farmer. He spent sixteen years as a Waldorf teacher and Master Teacher, and taught at the university and college level for over seventeen years. He began biodynamic farming in 1990 and currently raises dairy goats, bees, and other animals while managing a market garden with his wife and some of his nine children. His poetry and scholarship have appeared in many journals and he is the editor of ‘Jesus the Imagination: A Journal of Spiritual Revolution’.

NFP and my Conscience?

NFP and my Conscience?

It’s Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week in the USA, so Dominic and Paul talk about NFP: in light of the Church’s teaching about the individual consciences and the law of gradualism. Paul also shares some of his personal experience with NFP and being a part of the NFP subculture.

“We have long thought that simply by stressing doctrinal, bioethical and moral issues, without encouraging openness to grace, we were providing sufficient support to families, strengthening the marriage bond and giving meaning to marital life. We find it difficult to present marriage more as a dynamic path to personal development and fulfillment than as a lifelong burden. We also find it hard to make room for the consciences of the faithful, who very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations, and are capable of carrying out their own discernment in complex situations. We have been called to form consciences, not to replace them” (Pope Francis, Amoris Latitia).

The content for this episode comes from an article Paul wrote in 2020 for Homiletic & Pastoral Review: https://www.hprweb.com/2020/12/the-sweetness-of-the-yoke-of-christ/
